What Is Trauma-Informed Counselling?
If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “I don’t even know where to start,” when it comes to therapy, you’re not alone — especially if you’re carrying the weight of difficult past experiences. Trauma-informed counselling is designed with that in mind. It’s an approach that recognises the deep impact trauma can have on your body, mind, and sense of safety — and it meets you with unwavering compassion, free from any hint of judgement.
It’s Not About Labels — It’s About Understanding and Empowerment
Trauma doesn’t always come from one big event. Sometimes, it builds up slowly — experiences that leave you feeling powerless, unsafe, unheard, or like you had to cope alone. Trauma-informed counselling isn’t about diagnosing you or fixing you. It’s about working with someone who gets how those experiences can shape your relationships, self-worth, and nervous system — and who supports you gently, at your pace.
Safety First
In my practice at Fresh Minds Therapy, creating safety is at the core of everything. This means no pressure, no rushing, and no expectations for you to open up before you’re ready. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, menopause-related changes, identity questions, or something you can’t quite put into words — we start where you are.
Safety also means respecting your boundaries, your identity, and your autonomy. For many of us — especially those who are neurodivergent, LGBTQ+, or living with the effects of cultural or generational trauma — being seen and heard without judgment is the first step toward healing.
Trauma-Aware, Not Trauma-Defined
Being ‘trauma-informed‘ doesn’t mean we’ll only talk about trauma. In fact, much of the work might focus on building self-trust, exploring relationships, calming the nervous system, or even learning how to rest. It’s about honouring your story while helping you live beyond it. We won’t force you to relive past traumas but will work with you to understand and heal from them.
You deserve support that meets you where you are — without assumptions, without shame.
